Shumaila Hemani, Ph.D.

University of Alberta, Canada

My colleagues and professors have often wondered and asked me, "Shumaila, where do you get your ideas from?" I am shy in sharing with them that if there is any single gift that comes naturally to me, it is the ability to generate new ideas and new paths for myself.

Today, as we confront global crises ecologically, politically, and in health, I am on a mission to share my gifts with others to make them create a more exceptional world where global problems are addressed in a timely manner.

Attending graduate school played an important role in helping me realize my abilities and true potential. I have a Ph.D. in Music from the University of Alberta in Canada and I am the former Music Faculty, Semester at Sea, Spring 2020 voyage. Currently, I am writing my book for Routledge's Human Rights series. I have also contributed to music in Canada as an artist.

I know from experience what a graduate journey in the right college with the right advisor can do for you. Fortunately and unfortunately, I am also aware through personal experience and experience of friends what havoc a poor choice in school and advisor does for you. Therefore, I am taking time off from my musical artistry and academic work to support prospective graduate schoolers to find the right school and a suitable advisor, and navigate the world of scholarships, grants, funds, honours, and awards that would help them to pay for college and realize how they can uplift their families and communities in these unprecedented times. You can count on me to cheer you on your journey to become exceptional!

"Thank you for the unwavering resilience and teamwork you demonstrated during this unprecedented voyage. Your support on the Spring 2020 voyage was instrumental in the growth and development of our students and will continue to transform their lives for time to come."

Scott Marshall, CEO, Semester at Sea.
